Ocean Cleanup

Ocean Cleanup tackles one of today’s big environmental challenges: extracting millions of tons of plastic that are polluting our oceans. Rather than trying to collect plastic using boats and nets, Ocean Cleanup envisions a network of long floating barriers at central points of the ocean’s five rotating currents to passively gather the plastic at central points where it can then be collected for recycling. The Ocean Cleanup’s feasibility study indicates that a single 100-kilometer-long cleanup array could remove 42% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch over a period of 10 years. In the most conservative estimate, this amounts to over 70 million kilos of plastic, at a cleanup cost of 4.53 Euro per kilo. Ocean Cleanup was founded in 2013 by a Dutch entrepreneur. In September 2014 they ran one of the most successful crowdfunding campaigns ever for a non-profit organization: USD$2.2 million was raised through 38,000 contributors from 160 countries.
