Antonio J. Busalacchi, JR., is Director of the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) and Professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science and at the University of Maryland.
He also chairs the University of Maryland Council on the Environment. Antonio J. Busalacchi received his Ph.D. degree in oceanography from Florida State University in 1982. He began his professional career that year at the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center. His research has supported a range of international and national research programs dealing with global change and climate, particularly as affected by the oceans. In 1991, he was appointed as Chief of the NASA/Goddard Laboratory for Hydrospheric Processes, and member of the Senior Executive Service. In year 2000, he was selected as the founding director of ESSIC at the University of Maryland. Dr. Busalacchi has been involved in the activities of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) for many years and currently is chair of the Joint Scientific Committee that oversees the WCRP.
